SPA Designations should now be removed – Ó Domhnaill

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has called on the Government to proceed with removing Six Special Protection Areas for Corncrake in County Donegal, in light of the botched administration of the designations and the total lack of any public consultations with landowners.

The Donegal Senator said; “I have been constantly following up on this matter with the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht and the NPWS given that fifty eight (Stage 2) SPA Appeals, by Landowners, remain before the Designated Area Appeals Advisory Board for over a year. This is an unacceptable length of time as the landowners concerned have now been left in limbo.”

“The SPA designated lands relate to sites on Inishbofin, Inishdooey, Inishbeg, Falcarragh to Meenlaragh and the West Donegal Islands SPA’s.”

“Given the botched manner in which the Department have dealt with this entire process from the very beginning I have today formally written to Minister Deenihan requesting that the SPA designations be removed in light of the totally unfair, unjust and failed nature of the entire process.”
