Senator calls for Immediate Suspension of Local Government Bill

Special Seanad Debate Tonight

Donegal Democracy cannot be torn apart by this Government

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill will table an emergency motion in Seanad Éireann tonight calling on the Environment Minister and the Government to “Park” or “Suspend” the Local Government Reform Bill.

Senator Ó Domhnaill’s Motion has been selected to be heard on the adjournment debate tonight.

Speaking before the debate the Donegal Senator said “How can any Government continue to bulldoze” through legislation which will abolish the local government structure at the point closest to the citizen.  In Donegal’s case that includes the abolition of Letterkenny, Buncrana, Ballyshannon and Bundoran Town Councils, without any local community consultation whatsoever.”

“Tonight I will call on Environment Minister Phil Hogan to suspend his plans and instead embark on a wide ranging public consultation during 2014 in every town, with a town or Borough Council”.
