At Least 100,000 Medical Cards Now Under Threat – FF

Budget 2014 confirms and escalates the Government’s offensive against people with medical cards according to Fianna Fáil Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill.
Not only is the government taking away medical cards from 30,000 over 70s it is also hitting those under 70. The government is going to make cuts of over €113 million in alleged ‘probity’ measures targeted at those under 70.
Senator Ó Domhnaill commented, “This classic Civil Service phrase is quite simply is code for taking cards away from people. We have already seen 1,100 discretionary cards per month taken away so far in 2013. However, this new target of saving €113 million will likely see more than a hundred thousand additional people lose their cards working on the basis that the average cost per card is €1000.
“For months, Government representatives up to and including the Taoiseach have repeatedly denied that there has been any change of policy in relation to the allocation of discretionary medical cards despite the glaring evidence on the ground. My fear is that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg and that the Government’s cull of medical cards from those that need it most will now begin in earnest.”
