Ó Domhnaill Again Questions Irish Aid Funding

€623 Million Going on Foreign Aid this year

Millions of this Money Going towards Abortion Centres in Africa

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill,  has again hit out at the lack of transparency surrounding the Irish Foreign Aid Budget in light of the fact that millions of Euro of Irish Taxpayers Foreign Aid money has been spent to fund abortion clinics in Ethiopia.

The Donegal Senator commented; “Between 2005 and 2012, Irish Aid gave over €8.5M to two of Ethiopia’s biggest abortion providers. This again undermines the fact that the Irish Taxpayers continue to pay out millions of euro in Foreign Aid without knowing how the money is being spent,  at a time of severe cuts to essential payments and services in our own Country.”

“It is understood that the Family Association of Ethiopia (FGAE), which got €2.7m from Irish Aid between 2008 and 2012, list the provision of “safe abortion services” as one of its major focus areas. This particular agency provided 50,000 abortions in 2011. Over 10% of its over funding came from the Irish Aid Programme.”

In addition, DKT Ethiopia, the biggest supplier of medical abortion kits to the Ethiopian Government, received €5.8m. Almost 10 per cent of its total donor support came from Irish Aid in the period 2005 to 2012.

“Ireland currently borrows every single cent of our Foreign Aid Budget. I have on many occasions questioned the manner in which the Irish Aid Funding is being spent particularly in light of the fact that 75% of the funding goes to the UN, EU and World Bank. I have this week written to the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs requesting that all Irish Aid Funding to African Countries which is being used for any abortion related activity be axed immediately.” ;Concluded Ó Domhnaill
