Relief for Well Owners – Ó Domhnaill

Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has received confirmation that Water Charges will not be levied on the owners of Private Domestic Wells. This follows confirmation by EU  Commission Officials this week.

Senator Ó Domhnaill said;” This issue came to light when the EU Commission informed the government in November that Ireland had “incorrectly implemented” the Water Framework Directive and the Commission threatened to refer the case to the European Court of Justice if Ireland failed to comply with the legislation.”

“I have this week received confirmation from EU Officials that the 200,000 farmers and rural home owners who use private wells as their primary water supply will not be affected under the interpretation of the EU Directive.”

“It had been feared that the Commissions communication with the Department of Environment in November last would lead to the imposing of a flat-rate levy, or metered fee, on well owners.”

“I now very much welcome the confirmation that there is no intention by the EU Commission to impose charges for water derived from private wells.”
