CE Cuts Must be Reversed – Ó Domhnaill

A major attack on Community Groups

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has called on the Government to immediately reverse the proposed cuts to Community Employment Schemes.

Speaking at a meeting in Ballybofey today, organised by the trade union SIPTU and attended by CE Participants and Community Groups, Ó Domhnaill said; “The cutbacks totalling €41.5m to CE Schemes announced in the Budget will have a devastating impact upon services across the Country and act as an impediment to long term unemployed people looking to re-enter the workforce.”

“From next month there will be a reduction of €1,000 or 66% per participant in the Community Employment (CE) Programme. In addition to these cuts the Government are also introducing new guidelines that will mean that new CE payment recipients will now only be allowed to collect a single Social Welfare payment.  For example a recipient of the One Parent Family payment will receive only their CE payment and not their One Parent Family payment and CE payment.”

“In the Fianna Fáil pre-budget submission we were proposing that there would be an additional 20,000 CE Scheme places made available and that is in stark contrast to the position adopted by the Government to cut funding available in current schemes. “

“Groups and participants involved in the CE Programmes carry out exceptional work across County Donegal which includes work with Tidy Towns Groups, Community Centres, GAA Clubs, and other Community based organisations.”

“Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD has indicated that she will “review” her decision – but the only acceptable solution is for her to reverse her decision in full and immediately. “
