Outcome of Public Inquiry on A5 Road Vital

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has received confirmation this week from the Minister for Regional Development, in the North, Danny Kennedy, MLA that it is expected that the Independent Inspectors Report of the Public Inquiry on the A5 Western Transport Corridor will not be complete and presented to his Department until the end of the year.

Ó Domhnaill said:” The Irish Government have committed almost €500m to this project. The third key milestone for the scheme was achieved on target in November 2010, with the publication of the Draft Statutory orders and the Environmental Statement. The publications were followed by a formal public consultation period which closed on 21st January 2011.”

“Minister Kennedy has informed me that 2577 letters and signatories were received during the formal consultation period. As the result of the number and nature of the comments and objections received in the relation to the draft orders and Environmental Statement, the Department deemed that a Public Inquiry should be held.”

“I have now been informed that the Public Inquiry, which commenced on 9 May 2011 is ongoing and will run for approximately 8 weeks. I have also been told that the Independent Inspectors Report of the Public Inquiry will be presented to the Minister towards the end of the year.”

“Obviously I hope that the outcome of this ongoing process will be to ensure the project proceeds to the next stage and I will be continuing to pursue the matter both in the Seanad and with the Northern Ireland Minister for Regional Development.”
