Ó Domhnaill calls for Social Welfare entitlements for self employed to be changed.

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has called on Minister Eamon Ó Cuiv at the Department of Social Protection, to review the current system that is in place for those who were self employed and are currently out of work.

“The system at the moment does not allow those who where self employed to receive jobseekers benefit which is based on PRSI contributions.  This is a huge issue, and is affecting a large portion of those on the live register.

I would ask the Minister to come to some agreement where by those who where self employed can claim jobseekers benefit as long as they can prove their working record.”

“This situation in particular affects the self employed in the construction sector and it would also deter people setting up their own businesses as they will not be entitled to social welfare if the business does not succeed”.

I have spoken to many people who have tried to access Social Welfare and have been unable to receive any payments over the past few months.  This has to change.  I have spoken to the Department at length in relation to this issue and if elected to Dáil Eireann, this will be one of my main priorities.
