Údarás na Gaeltachta will retain its vital enterprise function

Donegal South West Bye-election candidate Fianna Fáil Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill today said that he has been assured by the Minister for the Gaeltacht Pat Carey that the recommendations about Údarás na Gaeltachta contained in McCarthy Report will not be implemented.

“Minister Pat Carey has assured me that the future of Údarás na Gaeltachta will be decided in the context of the Government’s 10 Year Strategy for the Irish language and that if anything, the Strategy will add to the functions of the Údarás and strengthen its remit,” said Senator Ó Domhnaill who is a member of the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta.

“Minister Carey shares my view that Údarás na Gaeltachta should retain its enterprise function so that it can continue to use its expertise to protect and create jobs and enterprise in the Gaeltacht.”

“Údarás na Gaeltachta supports 2,250 jobs in the Gaeltacht in Donegal and 7,472 jobs nationally.

“In all Údarás has supported 429 businesses in Dongeal, more than 80 during last year alone. Some €24 million has been paid out to large industry in Donegal over the years and a further €4.5 million to small enterprises. ”

“The Minister is visiting the constituency this weekend and I look forward to very productive discussions on the future for the Gaeltacht areas and the 20 Year Strategy,” concluded Senator Ó Domhnaill.
