McBrearty needs to come clean over social welfare

Fianna Fáil Bye-election candidate for Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has today called on Labour candidate Frank McBrearty to be honest with the people of Donegal over social welfare.

Mr. McBrearty has claimed that the Labour Party would “definitely not” make any cuts to the social welfare budget. However, his colleagues in the Labour party have recently admitted that this is not possible. Speaking in Galway this week Deputy Pat Rabbitte said “the situation is so grave…that there’s almost no area of public spending that can be considered out of bounds. He added “everything is on the table.” Labour TD Jan O’ Sullivan also admitted as much recently when she told RTE radio “I accept that across the board there’s going to have to be austerity.”

Senator Ó Domhnaill said: “Frank McBrearty is continuing to promise all things to all people. Telling the people what he thinks they want to hear will not help anyone in the long term. It’s time he levelled with the people of Donegal. He needs to come clean on social welfare. There is no point in making promises that can’t be kept.”

“The people of Donegal aren’t fools. They know that there is a deficit of €19 billion which must be dealt with.”
