Cancer Services are a key priority for me – Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill

Fianna Fail’s By-Election Candidate in Donegal South West Brian Ó Domhnaill has said that the development of cancer services in his constituency is one of his key priorities.

Senator O’Domhnaill continued, “I will continue to put pressure on the Minister for Health to ensure that follow-up mammography services will be put in place at Sligo General for breast cancer patients who have finished treatment. The delivery of this service is vitally important to my constituents many of whom live only 30 minutes away from Sligo Hospital”.

“I have also been pushing for cross border co-operation for the new satellite centre (linked to Belfast City Hospital) which is to be located in Altnagelvin in Derry by 2015. The Government has already committed to making a financial contribution to the project As a Dáil deputy from a border county I will be engaging with the Northern Health Minister McGimpsey to make sure access to this service becomes a reality for Donegal patients”.

“On a debate on Morning Ireland today (10 November) I was amazed to hear that Labour candidate Frank McBrearty didn’t even seem to be aware of the new satellite services in Derry or that Donegal radiation oncology patients can access services from Belfast City Hospital since 2006”.

“Unlike the other candidates I am not willing to talk down my county and its achievements. Of course we face challenges but there is also positive health news. Breastcheck has almost completed screening of over 5,300 women living in Donegal Town and surrounding areas. A second mobile screening unit will be located in Buncrana and start screening women at the end of the month. A new dedicated Colposcopy Unit for women was official opened in Letterkenny General Hospital last month. In addition Chemotherapy and routine follow-up care are provided in Letterkenny by the highly trained staff in the oncology ward”.
