€1.5 million for Water Schemes

Donegal South West Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has today received confirmation from Minister for Housing and Water Services Michael Finneran TD that over €1.5 million has been allocated to Donegal County Council for water improvement works in the County. This included €250,000 towards total pipe replacement of the Magheroarty Water Supply outside Gortahork.

Ó Domhnaill said; “I am very pleased with today’s announcement by the Minister which includes the provision of four water projects in my constituency. The sum of €250,000 has been approved by the Department under the Water Conservation Fund within the Water Service Investment Programme towards the replacement of the pipe network in the Magheroary area.”

“The current pipe work in Magheroary consists of 100 mm asbestos cement pipe which is outdated and causing constant disruption to the water supply in the area. This was particularly evident in the Summer months and the only viable solution is the replacement of the pipe network in the area. I am very pleased that funds have been allocated to this project following my representations on the matter to the Water & Environment Section of Donegal County Council, the Minister for the Environment and also officials within the Department. I now understand that Donegal County Council will be seeking tenders for this work very shortly with a view to proceeding to appointing a contractor so that the work can be carried out at the earliest opportunity.” ;Said O Domhnaill

Ó Domhnaill continued; “In total €1,415,850 has been allocated under the Special Funding for Water Supplies to Donegal County Council while five projects have been funded under the programme in the county three of which are in my own constituency.

  • Ballintra Water Supply Schemes- Improvement Works
  • Glenties/ Ardara Supply  Scheme – Improvement Works

“Work will also be carried out under this funding on the Gortahork/Falcarragh Water supply scheme. This work includes improvement works to the water quality by providing a new Clarifier at the filter station in Ardsbeg.”

“Today’s funding comprises of a national allocation of €10 million national allocation to Local Authorities for special funding towards water schemes identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as having potential issues regarding the safety and security of supplies.”
